The Business Development Specialist is responsible for assisting with marketing and business development support for attorneys and staff in designated departments and/or practice areas.

Our 320-member Litigation Department across 11 US offices in New York, California, Boston, Providence, Chicago, and Washington, DC, is looking for an experienced Business Development Specialist to join our team. The role will support our nationally and regionally recognized practices in Intellectual Property, Labor & Employment, and Privacy & Data Security Law.

This Business Development Specialist will provide sales support, working with the managers of the business development team to service noted practices. This includes but is not limited to management of pitch and proposal materials; creation of client-facing sales materials and marketing collateral; assistance with planning, management, and implementation of practice group- and specialty team-related events and business development initiatives; support related to the firm’s CRM program; and maintenance and posting of website and firm intranet content. Specialist may also be called upon to support firmwide initiatives, such as industry teams and other projects, as needed. This is an exempt position requiring flexibility in work hours. This position will involve occasional travel to other firm offices or events. A hybrid work arrangement is available for this position.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with business development team in preparing pitches and proposals. Includes compiling of research materials, drafting content, ushering materials through necessary reviews and preparation of the finished product.
  • Assistance with the development of client-facing marketing materials, social media posts and business plans.
  • Responsible for the planning and management of practice-specific events, including in-person and virtual events. Leads efforts with post-event ROI and analytics. Works with Social Media team to promote programs and assist with event follow up.
  • Assists with compilation of mailing lists for marketing projects utilizing the firms CRM, InterAction. This includes alerts, practice-specific programs, events, and other promotional mailings.
  • Leads effort to draft and maintain attorney biographies, ensuring they are future focused and current.
  • Assists with the collection and maintenance of representative experience, including tracking and recording daily new clients and matters report.
  • Works with appropriate business development team in maintaining the firm’s proposal tracker, experience database and other systems that store required information for pitches and proposals.
  • Assists with drafting and finalizing of legal directory submissions (i.e. Chambers, Legal 500, etc.) and additional legal directories and nominations as needed (including those in the IP arena).
  • Proactively make recommendations including but not limited to programs and/or process efficiencies.
  • Assist with the management of specialty team meetings. Includes setting up meetings, developing agendas, distributing materials before each session, and assisting in driving efforts on follow-up action items.
  • Monitor the Patent Docket Report daily and identify targets for potential business development opportunities.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with all firm contacts, internal personnel, and outside vendors.
  • Handle sensitive and/or confidential information.
  • Adhere to all brand, data governance and firm policies.
  • Assist with the creation and/or modification of other marketing projects as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including tasks specific to the department.

Job Requirements:

  • 2–4 years of experience in a professional services marketing or communications field. Experience in a law firm setting preferred.
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge of intellectual property, labor and employment, or data privacy space is preferred.
  • Industry-specific knowledge a plus.
  • Advanced-level proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and Word
  • Knowledge of proper grammar, spelling, and language usage, as well as standard business correspondence best practices.
  • Attention to detail with emphasis on accuracy and quality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent proofreading skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work to balance multiple projects and deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to develop and foster successful, working relationships with legal and professional staff while providing exceptional customer service.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven team environment.

In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows:

  • Los Angeles: $65,600.00 to $95,200.00
  • San Francisco: $68,900.00 to $100,000.00
  • NYC: $68,900.00 to $100,000.00
  • Providence: $59,500.00 to $86,400.00

In addition, this position may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and full benefits package. Actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, work experience, education, and qualification level. This salary range is Nixon Peabody’s good faith estimate at the time of this posting.
